Aspiring Painter       Grades 59
Take out your brush and palette. Whether you’re just beginning to paint or are putting together your portfolio, this class will challenge the individual artist in you. Try painting like the French—outdoors “en plein air.” We will cover acrylic and watercolor while learning a variety of brush and painting techniques such as color mixing, blending, and shading.


Basketry      Grades 5–9
 
Weave a little magic as you learn the beautiful art of basketry. Using reeds, fabric, and a splash of color, you will create a variety of both decorative and useful baskets. This course is appropriate for both beginning and advanced basket weavers.

Budding Artists      Grades 12
Become a budding artist as you explore with materials like pipe cleaners, googly eyes, paint, paper, relief foil, oil crayons, and papier mâché. Construct exciting art projects and bring home origami animals, pop-up cities, crafty creatures, and more. Put your creativity to work!

Cartooning      Grades 3–9
Draw upon your imagination as you step into the world of cartooning. Find out the tricks of the trade from our own professional cartoonist, whose Nancy comic strip is syndicated nationally and who is the creator of The Hartford Courant’s Connecticut Fan cartoon. Learn how to draw funny animals, crazy characters, and almost anything else you can imagine. You’ll create your own cartoon sequence or comic strip, and your work will be published in a special edition of The Summer Place Funnies!

Ceramics      Grades 39
Join in the fun as you pound, poke, and roll clay into fabulous, hand-made creations. Learn how to use slab, coil, and pinch techniques to make a variety of fun and unusual projects. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and experiment with a variety of textures and glazing techniques. You will  be amazed when your finished work comes out of the kiln!

ClayCreations      Grades 12
Do you like to play with clay? Learn the secrets of making clay from ordinary materials like saw dust, dough, and paper. After mixing the clay, you can create all kinds of incredible things from astonishing fantasy creatures to colorful name  signs for your room. Dig in and get your hands into a squishy mix or two!

Computer Art      Grades 39
Discover how much fun you can have using digital tools to create a masterpiece on the computer. Learn the basics of paint and photo software programs; put your head on the body of Hannah Montana or insert yourself into  the Yankees' lineup. Create an unbelievable 3-D project by scanning photos using cool textures and colors. See how easy and fun it is to become a computer artist!

Construction Zone       Grades 1–2
Do you love to build? Grab your hard hat and enter the construction zone! From castles to skyscrapers and floating rafts to forts, we’ll use LEGO® materials, popsicle sticks, and giant building blocks to make group and individual projects. No construction site will be the same!

Edible Art       Grades 14
Come be an architect and build a “log” home out of different types of pretzels. This class mixes fun, excitement, and creativity with food! Explore art beyond markers, crayons, paint, and paper…and make art with food. Projects will incorporate the use of everyday foods to create artistically presented and delicious snacks that are full of fun! 

Jewelry Design      Grades 39
Use beautiful beads, clay, embroidery floss, hemp, and wire to design and create your own jewelry. Accessorize your outfits by wearing your bracelets, necklaces, and earrings; give them as unique gifts or sell them to make some extra money.

Larger-than-Life Sculpture      Grades 39
Think BIG and learn how to make a fanciful, larger-than-life-sized object—whether it’s a shoe that’s large enough to sit in, an ipod the size of your dog, or a yo-yo as big as a chair. Using wire, papier mâché, plaster, and lots of imagination and humor, you’ll create your very own incredible, larger-than-life-sized sculpture!

Nothing but Sculpey Clay       Grades 39
This class is all about exploring new and different Sculpey Clay projects. Begin with rolling, molding, and slicing, or get more involved with marbling, braiding, carving, and texture-simulating clay techniques. Try making a one-of-a-kind pin, personalized pen wrap, custom-made bead, or design your own unique sculpture.

Photography      Grades 39
In this “picture perfect” course, you will be introduced to the basic elements of of black-and-white photography. Using a 35mm single-lens camera (provided by Summer Place), you will shoot pictures on campus and then learn how to develop and enlarge them. Your prints will be mounted and matted for a professionally finished product.

Pinewood Derby      Grades 39
Learn the tricks of the trade and perfect your sawing, sanding, gluing, painting, and precision-balancing skills as you build regulation sized Pinewood Derby cars. Finished cars will race on the Summer Place Speedway. Blast your way to racetrack stardom!

Positively Paint       Grades 1–2
Roll up your sleeves and get ready to experiment with finger painting and wet wax art. Mix paint to create your own unique color, or try your hand at sponge painting with wild watercolors. Learn how to paint in the styles of Hopper, Van Gogh, and Jackson Pollack, and create your own masterpieces!

Spa Days      Grades 39
Step into the Summer Place Spa. . . pamper yourself using common ingredients found right in your kitchen. From olive oil and oatmeal to applesauce and frozen cucumbers you’ll uncover the secrets of the professionals as you perfect your manicure and pedicure skills and also learn healthy skin and hair tips. Treat yourself to a day at the Spa!

’60s Tie-Dye Technique     Grades 39
Roll up your sleeves and get ready to mimic the “groovy” tie-dye styles of Austin Powers, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin. Using rubber bands and colorful dyes, you’ll test different techniques as you twist, soak, and tie t-shirts, socks, and handkerchiefs, and making the hippie styles of the ’60s and ’70s come alive at Summer Place.

Totally T-Shirts     Grades 3–9
Make a fashion statement in a class totally devoted to t-shirt art. Using stencils, paints, stamps, dyes, bleach, sewing and even your own iron-on designs, you will transform plain everyday t-shirts into Totally T-errific works of wearable art.

Ukrainian Egg Painting      Grades 59
Did you know that a 10-cent chicken egg could be turned into a $50 masterpiece? With a wax drawing tool, melted beeswax, 15 special dyes, and an egg, you will learn the same wax-relief method Ukrainians have used for more than 2,000 years. In their native country, these beautifully decorated eggs celebrate the spring and the warming of the earth. Choose your own pattern and color combinations to create wonderful gifts and keepsakes.

Using the Wheel      Grades 59
Have you been looking for a more advanced ceramics class? Centering and pulling clay are just the beginning as you use the kickwheel to create functional and one-of-a-kind pieces. A variety of throwing, trimming, and glazing methods will be taught as you design, shape, and fire your finished products.

Woodburning      Grades 59
Etch your creative ideas into wood by learning this “hot” hobby. Discover techniques for drawing, shading, and adding color to your wood-burned projects. Transfer an ordinary piece of pine into a working clock, platter, or even a book. Note: Due to safety issues, maturity and appropriate behavior are necessary to guarantee a safe and rewarding experience for all.

Woodworking      Grades 19
Use your mind, muscle, and creativity as you learn the craft of woodworking. Design and build a variety of special projects while learning how to use hammers, saws, sanders, drills, and other hand tools. You will gain new skills and confidence and are guaranteed to have lots of fun. Projects will be appropriate for both beginning and experienced woodworkers.
